Thanks Marty, today I'm going to read a fantasy story that I wrote. With a musical background that I wrote.

One of the best things about being a music composition student is getting other music students to help with composition recitals. When you write a piece with six parts, many of them on expensive instruments, it's not easy to arrange to have the piece read. Unless you're in a music department filled with excellent musicians who love to play and help each other out on recitals as a matter of course.

On "Elphonium" you will hear Caitlyn Lyerly - flute, Al Clevenger - vibes, Josh Huffstutler - marimbas, Gabe Waters - bass, Chris Isom - drums, and Hairy Larry reading spoken word. These students are all from Northeast Arkansas or Southeast Missouri and they were all in the ASU jazz program. So here's a big shout out to these students and all the other students who helped with my recitals over the years. And years and years. Yes, I was in the music department for almost 20 years.

Now about that story.

I originally published "Elphonium" on my website, SFF Short Stories and then as a minizine. I was inspired by a piece of art by indrikoff at Deviant Art. I will post links to the story, the minizine and the art at the Something Blue website, sbblues.com.

The story is about a king who went riding with his jester and his groom into a magic forest where they were ensorcelled by music played by elves on the Elphonium.

After I wrote the music for Elphonium I wanted to be sure that the spoken word part was short enough to fit in the space provided for it in the score. So Vivian and I went over every sentence deleting every unecessary word and random thought that wasn't required by the story. They say that 90% of writing is rewriting. Most rewriting is taking out the stuff you don't really need.

On the day of the recital I had prepared a slideshow of public domain artwork by Arthur Rackham, a famous fantasy artist who worked in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

So the artwork is public domain except for Elphonium which was used with permission. The story and the music were written by me and I have licensed them Creative Commons Attribution so others can use and build on this work just like I used the art of Arthur Rachham. And thanks to Indrikoff for giving me permission to use his fantastic drawing of a magic horn.

The entire recital was released as an album.

So now, recorded at the ASU Bandroom on November 30, 2018, here's my piece, the title track of my album "Elphonium"

Collaborate on "Malaysia" - 2021-10-17

I played this on my twitch livestream on October 17, 2021, with an arrangement designed for collaboration. Collaborators play over a piano trio with the bass and drums provided by an irealpro script with the chords for my original song, "Malaysia". The irealpro app can be viewed running on my tablet on the right side of the video screen.

Hairy Larry Rocks - Cover Your Friends Songs - Permalink

Cover Your Friend's Songs
It will help them out and your audience will love it

Calling all musicians!

Cover your friend's songs. Tell everyone how great they are.

I noticed when attending concerts that most bands play some originals and some covers. Some play all originals or all covers. This applies to you too.

I'm great with bands playing originals. Do your own thing. And I understand that musicians include cover songs because a) they like the songs and b) it's nice to play some music the audience already knows.

My guess is all these musicians have friends who write good songs. I know I do. Could be someone they played with before and they already know the song. Could be a friend who plays in another band and you have there CD with original songs on it. Could be someone you barely know on the internet who has a youtube video of a song they wrote that you really like.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Copyright Infringement Playing Stella By Starlight
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-04-21

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a band of young musicians play a jazz standard.

It was my great good fortune to be able to work with high school jazz musicians at the Delta Jazz Workshop for several years. I enjoyed the workshop sessions and listening to rehearsals but my favorite job was rehearsing small groups made up of workshop attendees, mostly high school students.

In July of 2018 I was given some amazing musicians including a rhythm section of young musicians who were already playing at a professional level. So this was a great opportunity to show these students the whole process, selecting songs, creating instrumental sections, writing arrangements, and rehearsing for a concert.

And we had five days to make all this happen.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents John T. Parks Playing Life | Something Blue

DJ Hairy Larry Presents John T. Parks Playing Life
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-04-14

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a little philosophy from a fine Arkansas songwriter.

One of the benefits of volunteering to work at KASU and recording for Something Blue is that I get to meet so many great musicians. That’s how I met John Parks, recording him at KASU live events. And there’s been quite a few of them. I can even say that over the years we’ve become friends in music, one of the best kind of friends that you can have.

On November 11, 2014, KASU booked John T. Parks to play at the KASU Coffeehouse held at the Arts@311 in downtown Jonesboro. He played solo, standing there singing while accompanying himself on a 6 string guitar. I love duets, trios, and bands, and I’ve recorded John in all of these configurations. But there’s just something powerful about a solo performance.

Especially when the performer is playing all original songs. The truth rings clear from a single voice, words and music written by the singer.
