Delta Boogie Newsletter/Gamer+ News - March 2024 - G+DBN Social Network

https://gamerplus.org/@hairylarry/pages/1710195029328

Ok now, I've put all my eggs in one basket. Gamer+, a server on the fediverse, has now incorporated the Delta Boogie Network. Both Gamer+ and the Delta Boogie Network have a long history of running social networks on unfederated servers, the kind where you only see people who have logged onto that particular server. That's the past. The fediverse is the future. On G+DBN you can follow anyone on any federated server, whether it's Mastodon, Firefish, Peertube, Funkwhale, &&etc.

So, for me, G+DBN is the one ring that rules them all. The place where I post and read and respond to your posts. I still have my account on mastodon.social and I do boost my hype there. But G+DBN is where I make all my social network posts.

If you want to you can join G+DBN at

https://gamerplus.org/

Or if you are already on Mastodon or some other federated server you can follow me here

@hairylarry@gamerplus.org.

Or if you want to view my profile go here.

https://gamerplus.org/@hairylarry

And what is G+DBN all about? My two consuming interests gaming and music viewed through a free culture lens. I love RPGs but all gaming is on topic. I play jazz and blues but all music is on topic. Free culture is a way to share your work with copyright licenses like Creative Commons or GPL licenses.

I license my music CC BY so that you can collaborate with Hairy Larry.

https://mixremix.cc/

My RPG, Just Quest, a rules extremely light OSR system designed for fantasy role playing is licensed CC BY.

https://www.minizines.cc/flat/?x=entry:entry200105-065552

Sly Flourish, who I follow on G+DBN, has an article titled, "What 5e in the Creative Commons Means to You".

https://slyflourish.com/what_5e_in_cc_means_to_you.html

Yes, the 5e SRD is licensed CC BY.

So now that the Delta Boogie Network has been folded into Gamer+ what about deltaboogie.net?

I wrote a program to display All My Feeds - Gaming, Music, Free Culture. RSS or Really Simple Syndication was the first social network, tying blogs and websites together since 1999. It remains one of the best social networks today. It's a standard specification not a company. Anyone can use it for free.

https://deltaboogie.net/

Here's a few G+DBN posts at the top of the local timeline.

I boosted Fifteen Years of Dyson's Dodecahedron.

https://gamerplus.org/notes/9qpzrcwoxwpd30wc

I posted Michael Ward's Senior Jazz Recital.

https://gamerplus.org/notes/9qq09pu1t5e6xmw1

I wrote a page called, I've been working on a DM kit for my Just Quest sandbox.

https://gamerplus.org/@hairylarry/pages/1694136459680

This weekend I will host a family game testing my Just Quest sandbox.

https://gamerplus.org/notes/9qgmuu2yed2g3skq

Are you on Mastodon or any federated server? Let me know. I want to follow you.

What have you been playing/listening to/reading/writing?

Please stay in touch. Forward this email and share this link.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry Playing Freddys Blues - 2024-02-25 01:28 PM

Hairy Larry Livestreams

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry Playing Freddy's Blues
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-02-25

https://sbblues.com/2024/02/25/dj-hairy-larry-presents-hairy-larry-playing-freddys-blues/

Thanks Marty. Today we're going to hear a livestream version of one of my most popular songs.

During the pandemic I would livestream on Twitch. I called my channel, Hairy Larry Practicing Piano and that's exactly what I did. I practiced my repertoire of original songs using iRealPro backing tracks as my metronome.

I licensed all of these audio and video recordings Creative Commons Attribution. What exactly does that mean?

It means that if you want to use one of these songs in your project whether it's a movie, a game, multimedia, or whatever you have permission to do that as long as the song is attributed correctly with the magic words, Freddy's Blues by Larry Heyl or Freddy's Blues by Hairy Larry.

There are many Creative Commons licenses including CC0 which dedicates your work to the public domain allowing anyone to use it without any restrictions.

I prefer CC BY or Creative Commons Attribution because it preserves the chain of attribution making it easy to find the musician who made the music so if you like it you can go find more.

And if you want to find out more about Creative Commons licenses I'm going to include a link to their website at sbblues.com.

Now, about the song "Freddy's Blues".

I wrote the song in 2013. It's a blues with funny lyrics so it had everything going for it. NJHB played it at my Senior Recital with Suzanne Michell singing. It's included on my album "Bop Soup".

It's also included on the most recent Bebop Beatniks album, "Live At Blues Fest" recorded in 2023 and featuring the incomparable Tyler Remagen on tenor sax.

But there's something unique about the version of "Freddy's Blues" on my "Livestreams" album. We were on lockdown so it's just me, my piano, and iRealPro. No horns! The song is about a young girl in love with a horn player in a jazz band so it just didn't work to have only piano solos. I had to sing the horn parts. First Freddy and then the trombone.

After I played it on the livestream one of my friends in chat said "Better get an audition for that trombonist."

So here I am now singing "Freddy's Blues" from my "Livestreams" album.

I Use Linux For Video And Audio Production - 2024-02-19 08:20 PM

I Use Linux For Video And Audio Production
My workhorse programs

I use Xubuntu Linux. I think these applications run on all versions of Linux. The first three also run on Windows.

Here we go.

Gimp - image editor
Openshot - video editor
Audacity - audio editor
Brasero - cd dvd burner
K3B - Blue Ray burner
Deadbeef - audio player

I do a lot of radio production so I have to have Deadbeef because it gives the total length of the playlist so I know if I have enough music for the show.

I also use SAW Classic and mp3 Direct Cut under Wine. SAW Classic no longer runs under windows but I can still use it with linux. Great for mastering tracks and precision edits.

abcde - command line ripper replaces Exact Audio Copy another windows program I used to run under wine.

ffmpeg - command line video and audio processor.

VLC - swiss army knife for video and audio

There are many others but these are my workhorses that I use day in and day out.

Using these programs I do weekly radio productions. I also make audio CDs and videos nearly as frequently.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jazz Recital Band Playing Elphonium - 2024-01-28 06:48 PM

Caitlyn Lyerly On Flute Josh Huffstutler Marimbas

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Jazz Recital Band Playing Elphonium
From the Archives Of Something Blue 2024-01-28

https://sbblues.com/2024/01/28/dj-hairy-larry-presents-jazz-recital-band-playing-elphonium/

Thanks Marty, today I'm going to read a fantasy story that I wrote. With a musical background that I wrote.

One of the best things about being a music composition student is getting other music students to help with composition recitals. When you write a piece with six parts, many of them on expensive instruments, it's not easy to arrange to have the piece read. Unless you're in a music department filled with excellent musicians who love to play and help each other out on recitals as a matter of course.

On "Elphonium" you will hear Caitlyn Lyerly - flute, Al Clevenger - vibes, Josh Huffstutler - marimbas, Gabe Waters - bass, Chris Isom - drums, and Hairy Larry reading spoken word. These students are all from Northeast Arkansas or Southeast Missouri and they were all in the ASU jazz program. So here's a big shout out to these students and all the other students who helped with my recitals over the years. And years and years. Yes, I was in the music department for almost 20 years.

Now about that story.

I originally published "Elphonium" on my website, SFF Short Stories and then as a minizine. I was inspired by a piece of art by indrikoff at Deviant Art. I will post links to the story, the minizine and the art at the Something Blue website, sbblues.com.

The story is about a king who went riding with his jester and his groom into a magic forest where they were ensorcelled by music played by elves on the Elphonium.

After I wrote the music for Elphonium I wanted to be sure that the spoken word part was short enough to fit in the space provided for it in the score. So Vivian and I went over every sentence deleting every unecessary word and random thought that wasn't required by the story. They say that 90% of writing is rewriting. Most rewriting is taking out the stuff you don't really need.

On the day of the recital I had prepared a slideshow of public domain artwork by Arthur Rackham, a famous fantasy artist who worked in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

So the artwork is public domain except for Elphonium which was used with permission. The story and the music were written by me and I have licensed them Creative Commons Attribution so others can use and build on this work just like I used the art of Arthur Rachham. And thanks to Indrikoff for giving me permission to use his fantastic drawing of a magic horn.

The entire recital was released as an album.

So now, recorded at the ASU Bandroom on November 30, 2018, here's my piece, the title track of my album "Elphonium"

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Low Earth Orbit - 2023-11-20 03:23 PM

Bebop Beatniks Live At Blues Fest

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Bebop Beatniks Playing Low Earth Orbit
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-11-20

https://sbblues.com/2023/11/19/dj-hairy-larry-presents-bebop-beatniks-playing-low-earth-orbit/

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear some honky tonk jazz recorded live at Blues Fest.

I just finished our new jazz album, Bebop Beatniks Live At Blues Fest, so I'm featuring Bebop Beatniks on From The Archives and on Something Blue this week. Just remember, you heard it here first, on KASU. I dug way forward in the archives to bring you these songs, pre-release.

I wrote "Low Earth Orbit" in 2018 and NJHB played it on September 1, 2018 at New Jazz In Jonesboro in the Jonesboro Public Library's Round Room.

I liked the song so much I moved it into my streaming repertoire and then onto the Bebop Beatniks short list. We've been playing it about a year but I don't think we ever played it as good as we did at Blues Fest.

Featuring the incomparable Tyler Remagen on saxophone he nails it. Listen as he plays. Sometimes his tone is so strong that the sax just jumps right out of the radio and into the room.

Also playing you will hear Jeremy Jackson - bass, Alex Washam - drums, Conley Hunt - percussion, and I'm on piano. All fine Northeast Arkansas musicians.

Ok now, here's Bebop Beatniks playing "Low Earth Orbit" at Blues Fest on September 24, 2023.

I've been working on a DM kit for my Just Quest sandbox.

https://gamerplus.org/@hairylarry/pages/1694136459680

The plan is to have blank hex area maps and square campground maps that are drawn at the table. Instead of modules I will be using dice tables selected and modified for Cozy Adventuring In Tobbins Shire. Low combat and no combat adventures using my OSR rules light Just Quest game.

So far I have a black canvas portfolio for the maps and a three ring binder for the paper. Yep, old school.

I have a busy September. I'm playing a composition recital at 5:00 PM Central on Sunday, September 10. Then Bebop Beatniks have two festival gigs.

Image Archaeology Paladin Girl - 2023-07-20 08:18 AM

Joan Of Arc

Image archaeology: Paladin Girl

http://udan-adan.blogspot.com/2021/03/image-archaeology-paladin-girl.html

Paladin Girl has become a cliche of modern fantasy art. She always looks the same. A young, slender woman in plate mail armour (often improbably form-fitting), no helmet, straight hair usually worn long and loose, conventionally-attractive face. On horseback, she might have a spear or lance. On foot, she usually carries a sword.

Paladin Girl is a fairly straightforward combination of traditional masculine and feminine signifiers. Her weapons and armour convey traditionally masculine power and 'hardness'; her face, hair, and figure convey traditionally feminine 'softness' and prettiness. The optimistic reading would be that strength and heroism are compatible with femininity. The pessimistic reading would be that women only get to be powerful as long as their strength remains compatible with conventional standards of female beauty. Either way, she is clearly associated with a particularly chaste and non-threatening form of sex appeal, with her armoured body symbolising her guarded sexuality. Unsurprisingly, she mostly turns up in works targeted at predominantly male audiences.

I became curious about where this image came from, and did a little digging. Here's what I came up with.

One obvious source is Joan of Arc.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry Playing Low Earth Orbit - 2023-07-10 10:21 AM

Hairy Larry Livestreams

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Hairy Larry Playing Low Earth Orbit
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-07-09

https://sbblues.com/2023/07/10/dj-hairy-larry-presents-hairy-larry-playing-low-earth-orbit/

Thanks Marty, today I'm going to take my chill jazz piano into "Low Earth Orbit".

The pandemic was hard on everyone but it was particularly hard on musicians. Many musicians not only had to endure lockdown but they lost their income too.

It was hard on me because, for me, like many other musicians, playing music is not optional. Of course, I practiced every day but as any working musician will tell you, that's not the same. I like to practice but I have to play for an audience.

So when my daughter started livestreaming I thought, maybe that could work for me? I got a twitch account and set up a twitch studio with a powerful computer, lights, and webcams. It was just the kind of project that I like. Technical and creative.

I picked some songs I'd already written and I wrote some more. Pretty soon I had 16 songs in my streaming repertoire. I programmed iRealPro to play bass and drums on my songs while I added piano. It was great. I called my channel Hairy Larry Practicing Piano but, to me, it was still a live performance three times a week.

And then we started having lulls between the surges and I felt safe enough to play outside, so I would play at the Craighead Forest Bandshell, Beatles Park, or I'd just find some nice scenery and sit in front of it and play.

I call it Guerilla Livestreaming Chill Jazz Piano In Scenic Northeast Arkansas.

I licensed all of these recordings Creative Commons Attribution to make it easy for others to collaborate with me or use my music in their projects.

Check out the Something Blue website at sbblues.com for some links.

Now, recorded at Beatles Park in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, on March 27, 2022, here's "Low Earth Orbit".

Creative Commons Attribution - 2023-06-30 10:37 PM

https://gamerplus.org/@hairylarry/pages/1688181135340

I've been using the Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY) for many years, long before Wizards Of The Coast made it famous in the gaming world by licensing the 5e SRD, CC BY.

I intended to write about the CC BY license before ORC was released. I want to discuss ORC and it's potential but I want to do CC BY first.

If I license my story CC BY (which I do) it means that you can build on this story, change it, write a sequel, make a movie, it's all good. As long as you include proper attribution. Like this.

The Wizard and the Djinn
by Larry Heyl - CC BY

This serves two purposes. It explains to your readers just where you get off adapting my work. Because you have permission to adapt my work.

But more importantly the chain of attribution allows people who like what they read to find more of it.

If a work is in the public domain, or CC 0, then you can adapt that work without including attribution.

I never do this, but you can. I include the chain of attribution even if it's traditional or author unknown. But you don't have to.

But if you adapt The Wizard and the Djinn you have to include attribution. Because it's licensed CC BY.

At the Creative Commons Chooser I see that a CC BY license

Allows adaptations of your work to be shared

and

Allows commercial uses of your work

https://creativecommons.org/choose/

So if you license your story CC BY someone else can alter your story and make a movie of it and profit from that movie as long as they include correct attribution.

CC BY is a very permissive license. As close to public domain as you can get.

But you still retain copyright, you demand attribution, and you can come to other licensing deals on your story if you and someone else want to.

Creative Commons licenses are great and they allow creators to build on each other's work. But if a large project, like a Hollywood film, wanted to use one of my songs they would never accept CC BY. They would have to have a signed contract and know who to pay.

You cannot remove the CC BY license from a work once licensed CC BY. It is irrevocable. But it doesn't stop you from making other arrangements on agreeable terms. You still own the copyright.

Gamerplus News - Special Edition - June 28 2023 - 2023-06-28 05:06 PM

Gamer+ News - Special Edition - June 28, 2023

https://gamerplus.org/@hairylarry/pages/1687930216009

After a few hiccups the new Gamer+ site is leveling out. I appreciate those who have already signed up. If you haven't, here's the link.

https://gamerplus.org/

The new Gamer+ is federated, which is a whole different ballgame for us. The Local timeline shows posts written or boosted by Gamer+ gamers, who have created an account at the link above. The Local timeline is most similar to the old Gamer+.

But then there's a Home timeline where you get all the posts and boosts by people you follow, whether they are Gamer+ gamers or not. The might be from dice.camp or tabletop.social or from any other federated social network.

How do you find people to follow? By reading the Local timeline. If I boost a post from someone I follow then that post will appear in the Local timeline. You can hover over or click on the poster's handle (@hairylarry@gamerplus.org), and click the plus sign to follow them.

Soon, you will be boosting posts to the Local timeline for me to read by people I might want to follow. Get it? It's a social network. Over all federated sites. Not just Gamer+.

So, that's very exciting. I'm finding lots of gamers and creators in the fediverse and the new Gamer+ gives me a gaming focus to learn about and enjoy what they are doing. If you are already on Mastodon, Peertube, or any other federated social network you can follow me, @hairylarry@gamerplus.org. Or join Gamer+ at the link above for a more immersive gaming experience.

So, please stay on topic. No politics or religion. There's plenty of sites that cover that. Gamer+ is about gaming and creating.

Tenkar has this same rule at Tenkar's Tavern where we host Inspired Unreality open game chat in the gamerplus chat rooms. Voice and text chat twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays at 11:00 AM. So, not this Saturday but Saturday week as they say in Arkansas.

I will send another Gamer+ news about that in July. The opening topic will be Fantasy and Science Fiction.

Sorry about the confusing email from Jazz Thursday. I did it wrong and entered the email first and customized the site names second, just bass ackwards. Maybe this email will be more appropriately branded.

Please forward this email to your gaming friends and share this link.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents The Eleven Oclock Small Group Playing Grumpy Cat At SXSW - 2023-06-27 12:20 PM

Terrell And Quentin

From The Archives Of Something Blue 2023-06-25

https://sbblues.com/2023/06/25/dj-hairy-larry-presents-the-eleven-oclock-small-group-playing-grumpy-cat-at-sxsw/

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear an original jazz song with a spoken word part about popular culture in the internet age.

My advisor, Tim Crist, was always encouraging composition students to involve others in multimedia projects. So I put together Trilogy For The Arts, an outdoor happening featuring jazz music, spoken word, metal sculpture, poetry, dance, photography, and audio and video recording.

I also want to thank Don Bowyer and Ken Carroll for saying yes and helping me make this happen.

The Eleven O'clock Small Group played the jazz. Trevor Scudder welded the sculpture. Lizz Etzkorn was dancing with hula hoops. Karen Newberry, Rick Lott, Gregory Hansen, and Mike Luster read poetry.

So, mostly ASU students and faculty, living and working in Arkansas.

I'll include a link to the videos and to a Delta Boogie page with all the details, photos, and the program for the event.

The only thing bad that happened was the last couple of songs got rained out. Fortunately, I had recorded the rehearsal, so I can play this song I wrote on From The Archives Of Something Blue.

"Grumpy Cat AT SXSW" includes a spoken word part that I read at the rehearsal. It's a short commentary on how an internet meme can create a star out of a cat.

So now, rained out at Trilogy For The Arts on April 24, 2015, but fortunately recorded at rehearsal here's the Eleven O'clock Small Group playing my song, "Grumpy Cat At SXSW".

And that's "Grumpy Cat At SXSW" recorded in the ASU Bandroom in April of 2015. Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, to hear Ron Carter and Cedar Walton, Fourplay, and Hiromi.

Grumpy Cat At SXSW
by Larry Heyl

Hi,

I'm Grumpy Cat,
the internet meme.

You've seen me hundreds of times.

People are always putting words in my mouth like
"I had fun once. It was awful."
and
"Your face. It's breathing my air... Stop it!"

On facebook I'm a Public Figure,
I have my own subreddit,
and my website is at grumpycats.com.

Really, I'm a nice kitty.
I like being petted
and sardines.

But they're lined up around the block
to see me at
South by Southwest.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB Playing Cookin For Piper - 2023-05-28 11:03 AM

Cookin For Piper Cover Art

DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB Playing Cookin For Piper
From the Archives of Something Blue May 28, 2023

https://sbblues.com/2023/05/28/dj-hairy-larry-presents-njhb-playing-cookin-for-piper/

Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a song I wrote, recorded at New Jazz In Jonesboro.

In 2013 we scheduled New Jazz In Jonesboro once a month at TheArts@311. We often played charts that had never seen a music stand before and although we were reading charts we leaned heavily into group improvisation and free jazz.

On July 6, 2013, we recorded the songs that would become the "Cookin' For Piper" album. Matt Jackson wrote "Cookin' For Piper". Joseph Curtis wrote "Working, P.M.". And I put "Monkey Walk" up, for the first time.

It's got a tricky rhythm with a bass vamp on the Rhodes starting and ending the song. Personnel on "Monkey Walk" were Hairy Larry - piano, harmonica, vocals, and percussion; Mike "Zif" Lovell - guitar; David Shade - guitar; Matt Jackson - bass; Joseph Curtis - trumpet; and Cody Ballard - tenor sax. James Carvell added percussion on tracks 3 through 6 including the title track that I will be playing on Something Blue this week.

The cover art for "Cookin' For Piper" was "Euterpe" drawn by Emily Dewbre-Young. I love the image, depicting a muse playing pipes, and Emily gave us permission to use her drawing on the album cover. Then she sold me the original artwork, very reasonably, and it's now hanging at Eclectic Geekery in Walnut Ridge. Visit the Something Blue website at sbblues.com to see the album cover and hear the whole album.

Ok now, recorded at New Jazz In Jonesboro on July 6, 2013 here's NJHB playing my song, "Monkey Walk".

https://archive.org/details/hl20130706

music

And that was "Monkey Walk" recorded by NJHB right here in Jonesboro, on July 6, 2013. Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, to hear more NJHB, Joyce Moreno, and Billy Drummond.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Michael Ward Playing An Aperitif
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-03-10

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear an uptempo jazz standard performed by ASU students in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.

I met Michael Ward at the Delta Jazz Workshop when he was in high school. I was immediately impressed with his tenor sax playing and his improvisational approach. When he started at ASU he played with me in the Jazz Recital Band. And then, after the pandemic, he played with Bebop Beatniks on the twitch porch. I’ll post links to these performances on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.

Then there I was reading the Monday Morning Music Memo and what do you know. It’s Michael Ward’s Senior Jazz Recital. I just had to go.

DJ Hairy Larry Presents Giant Steps Playing Tangerine | Something Blue
Posted on Sunday March 03, 2024

Thanks Marty. Today we’re going to hear a tenor sax rendition of a jazz standard recorded at KASU Jazz Thursday.

Giant Steps was a jazz combo featuring some of Jonesboro’s finest jazz musicians. The core group had Craig Baker, trumpet; Joy Sanford, piano; Tom Mason, bass; and Mike Overall, drums. Formerly known as Nightlife they played standards and they were a good dance band.

When they played for us at Jazz Thursday they brought Mike McGowan, a former resident of Jonesboro now living in Texas. As you will hear he’s fantastic on tenor sax.
